Nuo

Virtual Production Music Video

Feb 2023

As a common feature of historical cultures around the world, dance and music activities with a religious or ritualistic nature are often considered as a way to communicate with gods and other supernatural forces by religions or symbiotic communities, and Nuo Opera is one of them.

As a traditional folk opera with a history of thousands of years in China, Nuo Opera combines numerous cultural elements such as masks, body movements, percussion music performance, and Nuo altar decoration. Although its religious purpose has been diluted over time, its artistic value and the fantasy of natural divinity have remained unchanged.

Nuo is an exploration of Nuo Opera's traditional culture through music and visuals. It attempts to combine hand drumming, traditional percussion music, and electronic music to create a new form of performance.

Visually, Nuo utilizes digital art to present a fictional space, reversing the internal and external space relationships of hand drums and performers, inverting the scale relationship between Nuo elements and humans, to convey the so-called "divinity."
